Shamshel is named after Shamsiel, the angel whom, according to the Kabbalah, God ordered to guard the Garden of Eden after Adam and Eve were expelled. Shamshel is also the angel of day. It also represents a pe_is . Yep you heard me, a pe_is. 8-)But why? Shinji (and all the teens) are going through puberty, and this is just representing Shinji's "masculentity". There's a lot of things that could be interpreted from the Angels' names. Sandalphon, the larval Angel, is named after the Angel of Childbirth (or something along those lines... I'm going off memory here, people...).
Do bear in mind though, a lot of the Christian imagery and metaphors were put in there because various members of the crew thought they were "cool."
No, seriously...
