under which catergory could we consider the eva units to fall under?
by definition (websters) they can not in a traditional sense be considered robots considering their biological nature

I'd have to say it's bio-mech weapon. While they definitely fall under the categorization of "mecha", they still have features that make them rather un-mecha-like, such as intelligence.

but that intelligence can be denoted to another source such as eva-01 where shinji's mother is still trapped inside and as to eva 02 that can be linked to an extension of asuka's will
i mean shadow and vorlon military vessels possess some intelligence to the extent that they will even commit suicide after its pilot dies (vorlorn) or where they get angry (shadow)

Without that conscienceness, though, the Evas wouldn't be as effective. They were designed with an inherent will stemming from, in general, the pilot's mother.

in what way would the effectiveness of the evas be deminished?

Primarily, the pilots would lose some of their ability to synchronize with them. The biggest reason they can is that the soul inside is something close to them, something they once knew, but now miss. The same principle was from when Kaworu synchronized with Unit-02. He was an Angel, and therefore was a familiar sight to the Angel part of the Eva. More proof of this is when Unit-01 refused to act without Shinji in Introjection.

wasnt this problem solved by the time the eva production models were completed

Not really. Units 05-13 used dummy plugs of Kaworu and had no souls within them (that we know of), so the Angel bit in them took over control. I can't really see any way around controlling an Eva effectively without the use of a copy of an Angel's soul or a child with an attachment to whatever soul is inside the Eva. Otherwise, you end up with just another Jet Alone.

...maybe a "dumb" AI matrix
or maybe incorporate a living pilot like castle atriun or say a cylon raider

Well, some people think that 00 might not have a soul in it. That's why some of the Angels go attack 00 while it's active so they can meld with it. And before you say that Rei's soul is in there, remember that Rei's a part of Lillith, who's an Angel.

so then are you implying that rei has no soul

so then are you implying that rei has no soul Rei's soul is Lilith, as Kaworu's is Adam. Like Kaworu, Rei can synchronize with an Eva that lacks a soul. In comparison, when Shinji tried to synchronize with the likely soulless Unit-00, the Eva in turn tried to absorb him into itself, thereby gaining a soul.

... out of curiosity what exactly do you mean by "soul" Exactly what it would ordinarily mean. The spiritual essence... That which lives on after death... Yadda-yadda...
