 Evangelion: Angelic Days
« Thread Started on Jul 13, 2005, 8:07pm »

This is ADV's release of the Girlfriend of Steel 2/Iron Maiden Second manga. After Newtype finishes running Lagoon Engine Einsatz (from DNAngel creator Yukiru Sugisaki), it will serialize Angelic Days. There are no plans yet for a graphic novel edition of Angelic Days.

Angelic Days is an alternate retelling of Evangelion with a more decidedly shoujo turn (it was originally serialized in "Asuka" magazine). The character design is different this time around. So much so, in fact, that some Eva veterans might not immediately recognize the characters. All of the said characters also have slightly different personas with them, mirroring more ep. 26's alternate universe than the original series. Despite this, AD seems to have the same themes and elements that made the TV series so popular, albeit in vastly different forms.

So, anyone else looking forward to the domestic release?

Two maybe three pics in our background collage are from Angelic Days... The art design standsout.

Actually, according to an update on ANN of ADV's panel, graphic novel releases are planned. They're more money to milk from Eva fans, so it's only natural really...

The magazine Monthly Asuka originally serialized AD and a number of other shoujo series (the only one that stands out is Pretear, since I'm following it OnDemand). Monthly Asuka is the shoujo sister mag of the shounen mag that carries Sadamoto's Eva manga.

It's not so much that Angelic Days mirrors Ep 26's alternate universe, as it was always intended to be based on that universe. Girlfriend of Steel One was set up as a sidestory to the standard Eva timeline, regardless of the fact it's incredibly against canon. Girlfriend of Steel Two was always based on that segment of Ep 26.

One of Eva's main points was the lack of parental influence for the Children, and that's not there in AD. Yui Ikari and Kyoko Zeppelin Sohryu are both alive and well, gainfully employed at NERV. The Evas still exist for reasons Gendo isn't telling and Angels are still attacking for their own reasons, though this time around their not above even numbers with the Evas. The last chapter I read featured no less than three Angels active at the same time.

Like Eva, Angelic Days' focus is on the characters, and there's quite a bit to go around. Fuyutsuki, Hyuga, and Aoba are absent when there's no Angels around. Misato is again the Children's homeroom teacher while still maintaining her NERV position. Ritsuko has the same job at NERV, but is also the school nurse. Kaji is digging up information on Kaworu (no matter what universe it is, that Child's weird...), but what exactly he's doing it for is still unknown.

Some parts of this manga are quite entertaining. Shinji's reaction to Ritsuko's confession (hasn't had a lick of importance, yet, but the implications while Yui's still alive are something else...) was classic: his brain shuts down for a while. Once you adjust to the artwork, Rei polishes up real nice like in volume three (chaps 9-12). It's nice to see the enigmatic Rei far more open with herself than her competititon.

The only thing about this news that makes me sad, is the scanlators for Girlfriend of Steel 2 take too damn long to churn out chapters and pull licensed projects like good little boys... So, I'm stuck on a cliffhanger for no less than thirteen months after Einsatz finishes...

Not to mention in that quite fetching evening dress she wears on her date with Shinji.

Much like I said at G$, ADV is shrewdly avoiding any mention of this manga being a number two. They didn't even name the game it was based on...

it's not that great so far. The characters look slightly different and the first one only gets to where Shinji runs into Rei

There's a different artist this time around, joystick, so of course the characters look different. And it's only the first chapter. It gets much better even in the next few.
